Junior A Championship

Newmarket            3 - 09

St. Joseph's            1 - 13

Newmarket recorded a stunning recovery to defeat St. Joseph’s in the first round of the Junior A hurling championship. St. Joseph’s dominated the first half to be 8 points ahead at the break, only for a late goal from James Carrig it could have been a lot worse. St. Josephs stormed into a 6 point lead, picking off some very impressive scores against a Newmarket team who were completely off the pace in the first half. Carrig’s goal left the score line 1 - 10 to 1 - 02. A much more determined Newmarket team came out for the second half and settled early with points from Bob Enright and Paudie O’Leary. Newmarket never panicked and were content to pick off their points. The saying goes "Take your points and the goals will come" and this was exactly what happened, Tom McNamara goaled to put only 3 points between the teams. With less than 5 minutes remaining and trailing by 2 points Tom McNamara stepped up a scored his second goal of the game to put the blues in the lead for the first time. A late pointed free from Bob Enright sealed a famous victory for the blues. Best for Newmarket was Bob Enright, Diarmuid, Paudie and Brian O’Leary, James Carrig and Tom McNamara. Newmarket will now face O’Callaghan’s Mills in the quarter finals. This was a re - fixture played in Clooney after the original fixture was postponed due to the appalling conditions of the Clare Abbey facilities. Surely after all the money spent on purchasing the grounds, the facilities should be better looked after.
