Newmarket
recorded their second victory in the Minor A Hurling Championship when they
comprehensively defeated Smith O'Briens last Friday evening. Playing with
the aid of a strong breeze in the first half, the Killaloe side, who were
minus their injured county player Shane O'Brien, started the stronger and
opened up a two point lead after 10 minutes. A Bernard Gaffney free and a
point from play from Stephen Kelly brought the sides level after 19 mins.
Gaffney soon added a further 1 - 1, with the goal coming from a 21-yard free.
Smith O'Briens added a point of their own at the stroke of half time to leave
the score 1 - 3 to 0 - 3 at the break. In the second half Newmarket upped
their performance and 2 early goals from Bernard Gaffney added with points
from Colin Ryan and David Barrett killed off the game. David Barrett again
got on the score sheet with 1 - 1 in quick succession. At this stage the Killaloe
challenge had faded as they were reduced to 14 men. With time almost up, Padraig
O'Looney added a fifth goal for Newmarket with a great effort. Newmarket had
now scored 4 - 7 with out reply and Smith O'Briens finished the scoring with
their solitary second half point on the stroke of full time. Despite the result,
Smith O'Briens still remain as strong contenders for the Minor Championship.
Best for Newmarket were Bernard Gaffney, Enda Murray, Cian Liddy, Colin Ryan
and David Barrett.
