Championship Rd 1: v Wolfe Tones 16/05/09 @ Clarecastle
On Saturday evening, 16th May, the senior hurlers got their championship campaign off to the best possible start with a deserved six point win over rivals Wolfe Tones na Sionna. This year’s first round tie was completely different to that of 2008. The fine sunny weather present for the 2008 clash in Páirc Ciosóg Inis was replaced by a wet and windy evening in Clarecastle. Thankfully the pitch was in immaculate condition and did not deteriorate during the game. Wolfe Tones opened the scoring after 4 minutes before Colin Ryan scored the first of his 6 points to draw level in the 7th minute. Further points were added by Paudie Collins and David Barrett before Colin Ryan scored his second from a free. From this point on Newmarket were never to relinquish the lead. In the 14th minute James Liddy scored the game’s only goal and further points from David Barrett (2) and Colin Ryan (1) together with points from Shannon (3) left the half time scoreboard reading: Newmarket: 1-07 Wolfe Tones: 0-05. Brian O’ Connell pointed first after the break to leave 4 points between the teams and for the remainder of the game, Wolfe Tones never got closer to Newmarket than this 4 point margin. During the course of the second half Newmarket put up a score of 7 points with Colin Ryan (3), David Barrett (1), substitute Martin Murphy (1), James Liddy (1) and Paudie Collins (1) providing the firepower. Wolfe Tones fought to the end but could not break through the solid Newmarket defence. Final Score: N-on-F: 1-14 Wolfe Tones 0-11. In two weeks time Newmarket take on Cratloe in the second round which promises to be a close encounter.
