U16 A Championship

Parteen 1 - 13

Newmarket claimed their first win in the U16 A Championship when they deservingly defeated Parteen in an entertaining match played last Sunday in Newmarket. After loosing their opening game to Clonlara, Newmarket were very determined to get their campaign back on track. Parteen started the better and went into a 4 point lead with 9 minutes on the clock but a very determined home side got back into contention and scored some good points most notably from Eoin Hayes and Eoin O'Brien. Colin Ryan had 6 first half points for Newmarket. At the break Newmarket led by a single point. The second half started very favourably for Newmarket as Pa Coughlan and Colin Ryan both found the back of the Parteen net to put 7 points between the sides. Parteen battled back put couldn't break a gallant Newmarket defence. Eoin O'Brien, James Liddy and Colin Ryan (2) added further points for the victorious Newmarket side. Best of Newmarket were Colin Ryan who scored a total of 1 - 8, James Liddy, Eoin Hayes, Martin Frawley and Enda Barrett.

Performance of the week has to go to the U16s as they defeated near neighbours Wolfe Tones by a solitary point. After loosing to Clooney/Quin in the previous round by a point, it was the exact tonic for the blues as they got their campaign back on track. It proved to be a most enjoyable match with the lead changing sides on many occasion in the second half. The first 20 minutes of the game proved to be very tight and dogged as defences were on top. Within this period, Colin Ryan scored 5 points from frees with Eoin O'Brien scoring from play. Wolfe Tones responded with 4 points of their own. On 21 minutes went into a 1 point with the games opening goal. Micheal Cusack quickly levelled with a fine point. Wolfe Tones stormed into a 7 point lead within 3 minutes as the scored 2 - 1. At this stage Wolfe Tones threatened to run away with the game but with 2 minutes left to the break, Darren Cullinan found the back of the Wolfe Tones net with a very fortuitous effort. At the break Wolfe Tones led on a score line of 3 - 6 to 1 - 8. Newmarket stormed into the second half like a team on a mission and with 9 minutes the reduced the deficit to just one point. On 50 minutes, Wolfe Tones increased their lead to 3 points. A minute later, Colin Ryan scored Newmarket's second goal to level the proceedings. With just 5 minutes remaining, Colin Ryan scored yet another point to ensure a nail biting finish. A minute later Wolfe Tones equalised. Colin scored his 13th point of the day with a sublime side line cut. But yet again Wolfe Tones equalised. With almost 3 minutes of injury time played, Colin Ryan stepped up with yet another point but this time Wolfe Tones failed to find an equaliser and Newmarket held out for a very valuable I point victory. Colin Ryan finished the game with a very impressive tally of 1 - 14. Martin Frawley also had a tremendous game at corner back with many impressive interceptions. Newmarket are now on the brink of qualification and victory over Sixmilebridge in the final round will confirm their position.

Eire Og 2 - 07

Newmarket qualified for the semi finals of the U16 'A' hurling championship when they defeated Eire Og in a quarterfinal replay in Sixmilebridge last Friday evening. The drawn match was a cracker with some exceptional hurling on show and although the hurling didn't quite match the drawn match, it was just as exciting nonetheless. Eire Og opened the scoring with a 65m free but Colin Ryan responded with 2 point from play to put Newmarket into a 1-point lead after 7 minutes. However, Eire Og were starting to dominate at this stage and on 14 minutes they got the games opening goal. They added 2 further points before Colin Ryan converted a short range free to cut Eire Og's lead to 3 points. On the stroke of half time Pa Coughlan scored a well-taken goal after good work from Enda Barrett and Colin Ryan. Eoin O'Brien added another point for Newmarket to put the blues a point in front at the break. Within 2 minutes of the restart, the sides were level yet again. Newmarket returned back into the lead with an inspirational point from Colin Ryan and a well-taken point from Pa Coughlan. Newmarket's centre back Enda Barrett was dominating his line at this stage, however he then became the victim of some very hard Eire Og challenges and had to be substituted with 15 minutes remaining. This however bolstered Newmarket's challenge as they scored 6 unanswered points, all coming from Colin Ryan. Newmarket were now 7 points ahead with minutes remaining. Further points were exchanged with Sean Sheedy getting Newmarket's minor. With almost 3 minutes injury time played Eire Og got in for a consolation goal. But it was Newmarket who emerged victorious with a 4-point margin. Newmarket now advance to the semi finals where they will play either Crusheen or Clonlara. Best for Newmarket was Martin Frawley, Shane O'Brien, Enda Barrett, Colin Ryan, Pa Coughlan and James Liddy.
