Newmarket qualified for the semi finals of the U16 'A' hurling championship when they defeated Eire Og in a quarterfinal replay in Sixmilebridge last Friday evening. The drawn match was a cracker with some exceptional hurling on show and although the hurling didn't quite match the drawn match, it was just as exciting nonetheless. Eire Og opened the scoring with a 65m free but Colin Ryan responded with 2 point from play to put Newmarket into a 1-point lead after 7 minutes. However, Eire Og were starting to dominate at this stage and on 14 minutes they got the games opening goal. They added 2 further points before Colin Ryan converted a short range free to cut Eire Og's lead to 3 points. On the stroke of half time Pa Coughlan scored a well-taken goal after good work from Enda Barrett and Colin Ryan. Eoin O'Brien added another point for Newmarket to put the blues a point in front at the break. Within 2 minutes of the restart, the sides were level yet again. Newmarket returned back into the lead with an inspirational point from Colin Ryan and a well-taken point from Pa Coughlan. Newmarket's centre back Enda Barrett was dominating his line at this stage, however he then became the victim of some very hard Eire Og challenges and had to be substituted with 15 minutes remaining. This however bolstered Newmarket's challenge as they scored 6 unanswered points, all coming from Colin Ryan. Newmarket were now 7 points ahead with minutes remaining. Further points were exchanged with Sean Sheedy getting Newmarket's minor. With almost 3 minutes injury time played Eire Og got in for a consolation goal. But it was Newmarket who emerged victorious with a 4-point margin. Newmarket now advance to the semi finals where they will play either Crusheen or Clonlara. Best for Newmarket was Martin Frawley, Shane O'Brien, Enda Barrett, Colin Ryan, Pa Coughlan and James Liddy.
