Newmarket recorded their 2nd championship of the year when they recorded a well deserved 10 point victory over Cratloe in the final of the U21 Championship in Cusack Park last Sunday. Going into the game Newmarket wore the favourites tag and as soon as Alan Barrett scored the first point of the day, the blues never looked back. Paudie Collins scored a tremendous point from a line ball mid way through the first half and Bernard Gaffney soon added a goal to put Newmarket 7 points ahead at the break. Cratloe battled hard but the sending off of Alan Murphy didn’t help their cause. Brendan Mullins scored Newmarket's second goal late in the second half to leave no doubt about the location of the winners of “The Blake Cup” for 2004. The final score of 2-12 to 0-08 was a true reflection of the game and it was a job well done by the blues. The half back line of Seamus Meehan, James McInerney and Alan Barrett excelled for many periods of the game. Paudie Collins and Martin O’Hanlon got through Trojan work in midfield and the scoring prowess of Bernard Gaffney were all key in Newmarket's victory. After the match team captain Alan Barrett delightfully accepted the cup from county chairman Michael McDonagh. The signs are also good for 2005 as only 5 from the panel of 30 are overage and as soon as the New Year comes, their sights will be firmly set on retaining their title. Congratulations to team manager Diarmuid O’Leary and his management team of Kevin Enright, Tom McNamara, Sean McInerney, Johnie Collins and Pat Freeman.
