Weekend Round Up - 21st/22nd March 2009

The Senior Hurlers were first into action over the weekend with their opening game of the Clare Cup. Tulla had home advantage on this occasion and Kevin Walshe was the referee. The game started at 2pm and Tulla were first on the scoreboard. When Paudie Collins pointed two frees the teams were level. Newmarket took the lead with the next score and remained in front for the duration of the game. Paudie Collins took a sideline ball and it went all the way to the back of the Tulla net. Eoin McInerney and Dominic McMahon added to the tally with a point each from play. Andrew Quinn and Paudie Collins exchanged frees before Stephen Kelly scored a goal. Further points from Dominic, Sean Arthur and two from David Barrett left the score 2-10 to 0-7 at half time. Tulla, aided by the breeze, began to narrow the gap quickly with two pointed frees and Mike Murphy's flick saw the ball to the Newmarket net. Sean Arthur scored a third goal before Tulla outscored Newmarket 5 points to 1. The score was 3-12 to 1-14 with only ten minutes left. Newmarket finished the stronger side adding 4 more points to their total when Tulla could only manage 2 points.Final Score: N-on-F: 3-16 Tulla 1-16

The Senior Camogie Team were in action early in Clooney on Sunday morning to begin their league campaign of 2009. It was a great start to the year as Newmarket were always in control of this game. Leading 1-5 to 0-3 at half time Newmarket never eased the pressure and won on a score line of 3-11 to Clooney/Quin's 5 points.

The Junior B'S had the only home game of the weekend. Their first opposition of the year was Whitegate. Both teams were under-strength for this fixture. Newmarket led at half-time by 2 pts (2-04 to 0-08) thanks to  goals from Cathal Kilmartin and Pa Baker. In the second half with aid of a stiff breeze Newmarket won the game quite comfortably. Further goals from Ger Hannon and Dara McCormack. Best for Newmarket were Joe McMahon, Paud O'Leary and Ru McInerney.

The Junior Camogie team fulfilled the last fixture of the weekend with a game against Kilanena. Newmarket did very well in the opening half but trailed by three points at half time. Kilanena, superior in fitness and with some rather fortunate goals, were comfortable winners on a scoreline of 5-07 to Newmarket's 2 goals.
