Senior Camogie 2009

Senior Camogie League Final Replay: 27/05/09
Newmarket are the Senior Camogie League Champions for 2009 after a well earned victory against Kilmaley in Clarecastle on a wet and windy evening. Newmarket opened the scoring and remained in front for the duration of the game. Newmarket’s defence was very solid while the forwards also did well, not letting some missed goal opportunities get the better of them. Roisín McMahon was on target with frees and pointed 5 in the first half. A Ruth Kaiser point from play left the half time score N-on-F:0-06 Kilmaley:0-04. Newmarket increased the lead after the restart with a goal by Sharon McMahon and a free by Roisín McMahon. Kilmaley replied with a goal but Deirdre Cassidy struck the back of the Kilmaley net to bring the margin back to 6. Ruth Kaiser and Emma O’Driscoll exchanged points before Shonagh Enright goaled again and left only 3 between the sides. Anxious moments remained for Newmarket who continued to press for scores but to no avail. Kilmaley kept the pressure up but Newmarket’s defence was not to be broken and when Ger Lyons blew the final whistle Newmarket began to celebrate. Captain Mary Higgins accepted the trophy to great cheers.

Senior Camogie League Final v Kilmaley, 09/05/09

With a 45 minute delay to the throw in, the spectators would have thought the teams to be as frustrated as themselves. However, neither team appeared to be hindered by the delay of the referee and a very entertaining match was underway. Newmarket got off to a great start and led the current league and championship holders by 2 points. Áine O'Brien and Claire Arthur scored from play while Newmarket's defence was very much on top. Kilmaley drew level thanks to pointed frees from Claire McMahon, who was the only scorer for Kilmaley on the evening. Roisín McMahon exchanged frees with Claire McMahon before Kilmaley got their goal. This left the score 1-05 to 0-05 at half time. Newmarket dominated for most of the second half holding Kilmaley to a single point from a free. Áine O'Brien started to close the gap with a point and a converted free from Roisín McMahon left only one between the sides. With the free takers in top form they again exchanged points. Áine O'Brien ensured a tight finish was in store when she scored her third point from play. However, neither team could find the winning store and so it ended level. Scoreline: Newmarket 0-9 Kilmaley 1-6
